On 31st May 2025, the anniversary of the end of the Anglo-Boer War, commemorative events took place in the Chapel of the Holy Grand Prince Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles, in the territory of the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg, South Africa. Prayers were offered for the Russian people who had died in that war.
On the day of the anniversary, the Afrikaners, who to this day cherish the grateful memory of the support provided by Russian volunteers, doctors and sisters of mercy during the hard years of war, came to the Russian church to lay wreaths in their honour.
The parish rector, Archpriest Daniel Lugovoi, celebrated a litiya for the dead and sang “Memory Eternal” to all the Orthodox Christian soldiers who had laid down their lives in the land of South Africa.
The parishioners and guests laid flowers at the memorial plaque commemorating the Russian volunteers who had died during the war.
At the request of those present, Father Daniel also gave a talk on the history of the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh and the establishment of the Russian parish in Johannesburg, as well as on the Orthodox liturgy and church traditions, and answered numerous questions from the audience.
