On May 31, which marks the end of the Anglo-Boer War, memorial events were held at the chapel of the Holy Prince Vladimir Equal-to-the-Apostles, located in the territory of the church of St. Sergius in Johannesburg, to commemorate the Russians who were killed in that armed conflict.
The events were initiated by Mr. Freddie Peters, head of the Afrikaans Cultural Council of the Klipriver district. On this day, the Afrikaners who still remember the support given by Russian volunteers, medical doctors and nurses, during the hard years of the war, expressed a wish to honor their memory by laying wreaths at the Russian church.
Archpriest Daniil Lugovoy, rector of the parish of St. Sergius of Radonezh, celebrated a requiem litany for the fallen and proclaimed Memory Eternal to all the Orthodox soldiers who laid down their lives in South Africa.
Then the parishioners and guests laid flowers at the memorial plaque with names of the fallen Russian volunteers, the parish website reports.
Afterwards, refreshments were offered at the parish centre to all those present.
The event was attended by H.E. Iliya Rogachev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of South Africa.
